Les boues calcaires sont formées par le dépôt du squelette calcaire d'organismes planctoniques. Ces boues n'existent pas dans la zone des dépôts terrigènes où les squelettes sont dispersés au milieu des sables et des argiles. Elles ne se sédimentent pas non plus aux très grandes profondeurs car au cours de leur lente descente les tests se dissolvent.
